Phatic Communication in Online English Class Discussions through Facebook Comments

Phatic communication refers to small talks that aim form ties of personal union between people or the speakers. Especially in this digital age, phatic is somehow still used. This research aims uncover kinds and functions used by Indonesian students who have been doing online classes through Facebook, responding their classmates’ material presentations, having discussions comment column. current study employs qualitative method with document analysis technique. The data recent during course was examined techniques from students’ Facebook comments activity words, phrases, clauses, sentences related expressions. Moreover, analyzed following steps: 1) labeling data; 2) classifying into its types functions; 3) interpreting findings; 4) drawing conclusions. study’s main finding appearance expressions, for instance, greeting, thankfulness, compliment, apology, encouragement, wishing each other. As typical conversation made social media platforms such as we suggest some language styles like abbreviations, non-standard spelling, emojis also appeared.
